| Couples Counseling Individual Counseling Family Therapy Links/Resources Sessions | SessionsAll sessions/appointments are easily scheduled by telephone. They are typically 45-minutes in length, although longer sessions can be arranged. Family Therapy sessions are often scheduled for 90 minutes with a break in between. In-Office SessionsMany people, even in these days of electronic communication, still prefer to meet with a therapist in person, face-to-face. Telephone SessionsClients who use telephone sessions tell me they find it to be a useful option for addressing certain issues, and are glad it is available. As with Skype (Please see below), choosing to use Telephone Sessions may depend on several things: a client’s preference, transportation (ability to get to and from the office), and the issues being addressed. Clients, who on occasion have an unexpected need to consult, are relieved to know that Telephone Sessions may be available. Some clients, who initially expressed doubts about Telephone Sessions, later remarked that it just took some time getting used to. If we agree to use Telephone Sessions, I prefer that, whenever possible, we meet in-person for our first session. One reason is that clients tell me they were able to get a better sense of me than they would have, had they not met me in person. As a result, it made them feel more confident in my ability to help then in future Telephone Sessions. Note: In our first conversation we will discuss the topics/ issues that concern you, and the use of Telephone Sessions to effectively address them. Skype Sessions: “The New Face-to-Face Therapy”Every day, more and more people, for a myriad of reasons, are using Skype to consult with therapists and with other professionals (please see Telephone Sessions). They say Skype is an effective and convenient way to address certain issues. Skype offers a more personal experience than is available with Telephone Sessions; you see me, and I see you. It also accommodates present-day realities having to do with time, scheduling, travel, and access. For sighted people, the benefits (in terms of the relationship) of being able to see another person are innumerable. This visual connection has all the more value in therapy, when both the client and the therapist often rely on expressions and body language as much as they do on verbal communication. Many people, including clients, therapists and other personal-service professionals, report that this is what makes Skype such a helpful tool. If we agree to use Skype, I prefer that, whenever possible, we meet in-person for our first session. One reason is that clients tell me they were able to get a better sense of me than they would have, had they not met me in person. As a result, it made them feel more confident in my ability to help them in future Skype sessions. As a practitioner, when I see someone in person, face-to-face, at least once, it allows me to experience them more fully in their uniqueness, and it allows me to experience them multi-dimensionally. These factors afford me the advantage of being better able to work and collaborate with them going forward as we address issues using Skype. Note: In our first conversation we will discuss the topics/ issues that concern you, and the use of Skype to effectively address them. If you haven’t tried using Skype with family and friends, or have not yet used it at work, you should give it a try. You can download your free version of Skype here.
