About Kate Burns, LMFTKate was licensed as a Psychotherapist and Family Therapist in the 1980’s in California where the study of relationships, as a discipline, began. She has been a clinical member of the Association for Marriage and Family Therapy since 1989. Upon her return to New York, she was granted a New York State license in 2005. She has worked with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of settings: private practice, community-based clinics and programs, and treatment programs, in both in-patient and out-patient settings, in California and New York. Kate was involved in clinical research on Bipolar Disorder (funded jointly by government and academic institutions). She was also involved in research on improving couple and family functioning, and presented nationally on the subject. She holds the Approved Supervisor designation; a qualified, master therapist eligible to train and supervise graduate students, and trainees who are pursuing licensure (AAMFT) www.aamft.org. She is a consultant to organizations and treatment programs assisting them in the development of successful and improved systems of care. Kate has written for the profession in the areas of psychotherapist training, and the process of systemic change; the incorporation of diverse clinical approaches in chemical dependency treatment, including Cognitive/ Behavioral Therapy, Multi-Family-Group-Education Therapy, and others. She has presented nationally on these subjects. Kate is fluent in using the tools of Cognitive / Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, as well as those of Long-Term, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Kate integrates holistic (Mind-Body) approaches, such as mindfulness and hypnosis, when appropriate. Both are well-researched and creative complements to facilitating of growth and change. She is a clinical member of The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis www.asch.net. She completed a post-graduate, clinical training program at the San Diego Cognitive Therapy Training Center www.cognitivetherapyandtrainingcenter.com. Kate began post-graduate training under Dr. Michael Yapko, Ph. D. in early 1990, and continues in professional consultation with him. Dr. Yapko is a Clinical Psychologist, author, and internationally recognized expert and lecturer on the treatment of Depression, and the use of Solution- Focused Therapy and Clinical Hypnosis in treating Anxiety and Depression. www.yapko.com.
